About the Author


Charles Fountain worked for more than a decade as a television and radio sportscaster in Boston and New York before joining the journalism faculty at Northeastern University in 1985. His writing has appeared in more than three-dozen newspapers and magazines, including The Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor and the Columbia Journalism Review. He has appeared frequently on the ESPN SportsCentury series, commenting on the myth and culture of American sport, and has appeared on NPR, and more than fifty television and radio stations nationwide. In 1998-99, he was a Fellow at the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center in New York.

He is also the author of Another Man’s Poison: The Life and Writing of Columnist George Frazier, called “a superb piece of work” by Publishers Weekly, and Sportswriter: The Life and Times of Grantland Rice, hailed by the Chicago Sun-Times as “one of the best newspaper biographies in recent years.”

A graduate of Boston College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Fountain lives in Duxbury, Massachusetts with his wife, Cathy.
